Cities nearby: Frankfurt, Potsam or by Regionalexpress BERLIN
Unmissable in scale and impact, Berlin's great sights are scattered over the city, conjuring up inspiring views and deep-felt stories.
The Kurfürstendamm or simply Ku'damm is Berlin's most well-known shopping street. Stretching for 3.5 km (2 miles) westwards from the Memorial Church, it is a wide boulevard flanked by shops, hotels and restaurants, and despite competition from the East's up-and-coming shopping areas around Friedrichstrasse and Hackescher Markt it has maintained its image as the place to shop and stroll. The liveliest section is between Breitscheidplatz and the fashionable Fasanenstrasse.
Further down towards Olivaer Platz the Ku'damm becomes more sedate: there are more exclusive shops including some from such renowned names as Jean-Paul Gaultier, Jil Sander and Gianni Versace.
The top end of the Ku'damm at Breitscheidplatz merges into the Tauentzienstrasse, less glamorous than the Ku'damm but actually busier and full of shops - it's here where you'll find department stores such as the famous KaDeWe.
The Ku'damm's side streets are also worth a look - here you'll find a mixture of more down-to-earth stores including junk and antique shops as well as small but exclusive boutiques and extremely trendy hair salons.
Shops and Restaurants
Most shops open from Monday to Saturday between 9am or 10am in the morning and 8pm - 10pm in the evening. Restaurants are generally open late into the night.
